In addition VMRC maintains research on ATM mutations detected in AT patients These are alterations observed in AT patients which are likely to be deleterious to ATM function (e.g. truncation mutations).
The Molecular Genetics Program of the Virginia Mason Research Center is also focusing on two very rare diseases where patients are cancer-susceptible and radiation sensitive — Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT) and Nijmegen Breakage Syndrome (NBS). These are very rare diseases, Dr. Concannon explains, perhaps one in a million patients — so rare that many physicians will never see a case in their lifetimes.
